The Prodigal Son

Extravagant Love

Luke 15:11-32

[Prodigal (prod' e gel) adj. 1. Addicted to wasteful expenditure, as of money, time, or strength; extravagant. 2. Yielding in profusion; bountiful. 3. Lavish; profuse. n. One who is wasteful or profligate; a spendthrift.] We have thought that the prodigal in Jesus' parable was the son. He wasted his inheritance. He was a spendthrift. But the real prodigal is the father. He was far more extravagant with his love than the son was with money. His loving was lavish, profuse, bountiful. He was a spendthrift with love. He gave his love away with no regard for any return. So we should call the parable The Prodigal Father-- or The Prodigal God, because that's who this story is about.
